Pain involving these parts of the mouth, even when minor, can indicate a severe underlying problem that could get worse with time. It is important to contact a dentist as soon as possible for a professional examination to minimize damage to the teeth, gums, and supporting bone. Short-term action can be taken to relieve oral pain, which can be very severe.

What counts as a dental emergency?

A dental emergency is any problem affecting your teeth, gums, or mouth that needs prompt attention to stop pain, save a tooth, or prevent an infection from spreading. If you are unsure, it is always safest to call us — early treatment usually means simpler, less costly care. Common dental emergencies we treat include:

• Severe, persistent or throbbing toothache
• A knocked-out (avulsed) adult tooth
• A broken, chipped or cracked tooth
• A lost filling, crown, veneer or bridge
• Facial or gum swelling, or a suspected dental abscess
• Bleeding that won’t stop after an extraction
• A dental injury following an accident, fall or sports impact
• Painful wisdom teeth or an infection around the gum

What should I do in a dental emergency before I reach the dentist?

The right first-aid steps in the first hour can protect your tooth and reduce pain. Follow the guidance below for your situation, then call us on 01628 532 932.

Knocked-out adult tooth

Time is critical — a tooth reimplanted within the hour has the best chance of survival.

1. Pick the tooth up by the crown (the white part), never the root.
2. If it is dirty, rinse it briefly in milk or your own saliva — do not scrub it or use soap.
3. Try to place it gently back into the socket and bite softly on a clean cloth to hold it.
4. If you can’t reinsert it, keep it in a cup of milk (or inside your cheek) — not water.
5. Call us immediately and come straight in.

Do not attempt to reinsert a knocked-out baby tooth — call us for advice instead.

Broken, chipped or cracked tooth

1. Save any pieces and keep them in milk if possible.
2. Rinse your mouth with warm water.
3. Use a cold compress on the outside of your cheek to reduce swelling.
4. Call us to arrange an urgent appointment.

Severe toothache

1. Rinse gently with warm salt water.
2. Clean carefully between the teeth to remove any trapped food.
3. Take over-the-counter pain relief as directed on the packet — never place aspirin directly onto the gum or tooth, as it can burn the tissue.
4. Call us if the pain is severe or lasts more than a day or two.

Lost filling or crown

1. Keep the crown if you still have it.
2. Temporary dental cement from a pharmacy can protect the tooth in the meantime.
3. Avoid chewing on that side and call us to have it re-fitted or replaced.

Dental abscess or facial swelling

Swelling, a bad taste, fever or a tender lump on the gum can signal an infection that needs prompt treatment. Rinse with warm salt water and call us the same day. If swelling spreads towards your eye or neck, or affects your breathing or swallowing, treat it as a medical emergency (see below).

When should I call 999 or go to A&E instead?

Most dental problems are best handled by a dentist. However, go to your nearest Accident & Emergency department or call 999 if you have:

• Swelling that is affecting your breathing or swallowing
• Swelling spreading rapidly to your eye or neck
• Bleeding that will not stop
• A serious injury to the face or jaw following an accident
