Veneers are thin, custom-made shells

Veneers are thin, custom-made shells crafted of tooth-coloured materials designed to cover the front surface of teeth to improve the overall appearance of teeth.

They are made of either thin plastic resin or porcelain and can be placed to:

  • correct poorly formed or mildly mal-positioned teeth
  • close gaps between teeth
  • mask internal stains
  • restore partially broken-down teeth

How are veneers made?

Veneers are a well-established cosmetic dental treatment that can address a wide range of concerns — from discolouration and chipping to gaps and minor misalignment.

At Ashtree House Dental, we offer both porcelain and composite veneers, tailored to your individual teeth, facial features and desired outcome. A thorough consultation is carried out before any treatment to ensure veneers are the right option for you.

What are dental veneers?

Veneers are thin, custom-made shells — crafted from either porcelain or tooth-coloured composite resin — that are bonded to the front surface of your teeth. They are designed to improve the overall appearance of your smile while preserving as much of your natural tooth structure as possible.

Veneers can be used to: – Correct poorly formed or mildly mal-positioned teeth – Close gaps between teeth (diastema) – Mask internal or surface staining that cannot be resolved with whitening – Restore partially broken-down or chipped teeth – Improve the shape, size or symmetry of your smile

Porcelain veneers vs composite veneers — what is the difference?

Porcelain veneers are fabricated in a dental laboratory by a skilled technician, using impressions taken from your teeth. They are highly durable, stain-resistant, and offer a very natural, translucent appearance. Porcelain veneers typically require a small amount of tooth preparation before placement and are not reversible.

Composite veneers are applied chairside by your dentist using tooth-coloured resin material, shaped and sculpted directly onto the tooth. They can often be completed in a single appointment and require little or no preparation of the tooth. Composite veneers are generally more affordable than porcelain, although they may be less durable and more susceptible to staining over time.

Your dentist will discuss the most suitable option for your individual circumstances during your consultation.

How are veneers made?

Step 1 — Consultation and planning Your dentist will carry out a thorough clinical examination and assess whether veneers are appropriate for you. We will discuss material choices, treatment sequence, expected outcomes, and any questions or concerns you may have. In most cases, a mock-up is created so you can visualise how your veneers will look before any work begins.

Step 2 — Tooth preparation (where required) At your preparation appointment, a small, controlled amount of enamel may be removed from the front surface of the tooth to create space for the veneer. An impression is taken and sent to our dental laboratory. A temporary veneer is fitted in the meantime to protect the tooth.

Step 3 — Shade matching For porcelain veneers, a shade guide is used to ensure an accurate colour match with your surrounding teeth. In some cases, a visit to the laboratory may be arranged.

Step 4 — Fitting your veneers At your final appointment, the temporary veneer is removed, the tooth surface is carefully cleaned, and the permanent veneer is tried in position to check fit, bite, and appearance. Once we are satisfied — and you are happy — the veneer is bonded permanently to the tooth using dental cement.

Is veneer treatment right for you?

Veneers are suitable for many patients, but a full consultation is always required to confirm this. They are generally most appropriate if you:

  • Have healthy teeth and gums with no active decay or gum disease
  • Have realistic expectations about the likely outcome
  • Understand that porcelain veneers involve an irreversible preparation of the tooth
  • Are not heavily grinding or clenching your teeth (bruxism may affect the longevity of veneers)

Our team will always provide honest advice on whether veneers are the right choice, or whether an alternative — such as composite bonding or teeth whitening — may better suit your needs.

How long do veneers last?

With good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups, porcelain veneers can last many years. Composite veneers typically have a shorter lifespan but can be repaired or replaced more easily. The longevity of any veneer depends on how well you care for your teeth, your bite, and lifestyle factors such as diet and habits.

Why Choose Ashtree House Dental for Veneers?

Veneers are an irreversible treatment for porcelain, and a significant cosmetic investment for any patient. Here is what you can expect when you choose us:

Clinician-led treatment — your veneers are planned and fitted by a dentist with specific training in cosmetic and aesthetic dentistry, not delegated to non-clinical staff.

Thorough consultations — we examine your teeth carefully, discuss material options honestly, and in most cases use a mock-up to let you visualise the result before any preparation takes place.

Personalised treatment planning — shade, shape and the number of veneers are chosen to complement your individual facial features and smile, not applied as a one-size-fits-all solution.

Honest advice — if composite bonding or teeth whitening would achieve a comparable result with less intervention, we will tell you. We never recommend more treatment than is necessary.

Ongoing aftercare and support — we provide written aftercare guidance and review your veneers at subsequent check-up and hygiene appointments to monitor their condition and longevity.

If you would like to find out whether veneers could be the right option for you, our team at Ashtree House Dental would be happy to help. We welcome patients from Wooburn Green, Beaconsfield, High Wycombe, Flackwell Heath and surrounding areas.

Frequently asked questions

1. Do veneers damage your teeth?

Porcelain veneers require a small, irreversible reduction of the enamel surface — this is why the decision to proceed should be made carefully and only after a thorough consultation. Composite veneers often require little or no tooth preparation.

2. Are veneers painful?

Most patients find the procedure very comfortable. Local anaesthetic is used during tooth preparation if required, and sensitivity after treatment, if it occurs at all, is usually mild and short-lived.

3. Can I whiten my teeth if I have veneers?

Veneers do not respond to tooth whitening products. If you are considering teeth whitening, it is advisable to whiten your teeth before having veneers fitted so that the veneer shade can be matched to your desired tooth colour.

4. How do I care for veneers?

Veneers should be cared for just like your natural teeth — brushing twice daily with a non-abrasive fluoride toothpaste, flossing, and attending regular check-ups and hygiene appointments. Avoid biting on very hard foods or objects.

5. How much do veneers cost?

The cost of veneers varies depending on the material used, the number of teeth being treated, and the complexity of your case. We will always provide a full written cost plan before any treatment begins. Flexible finance options may be available.
